26th September European Langauges Day

Friday was European Languages Day. In assembly Year 1 children sang head, shoulders, knees and toes in French. The children learnt it very quickly and enjoyed performing to the school.

There is a video of them performing but unfortunately it will not upload :-(

Perhaps you could go on to the website that we used to learn the song and get them to sing to you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EFXCdryyRM

Monday 29th September

In English we looked at several lost toy stories. The children painted their favourite character from one of the books. First they thought about the shape of the character and sketched it out in pencil. Then they look carefully at the character and chose suitable colour paint. They practised holding the paintbrush like a pencil to get good control over their painting. Some of the painting will be on display in the school!

Tuesday 23rd September

The children have been introduced to the concept of number bonds. The children should be aiming for instant recall of these number facts as they are some of the basic number skills that children will be drawing on.

We have started with number bonds to 10. We have been using our fingers to help us.  We started off with a painting activity and used 2 colours. We looked at the different combinations that we could make.

In maths lessons use our fingers to help us work out the number facts. If we put 1 finger down, there are 9 still standing up, so we can say 1+9=10

Number bonds to 10

10+0=10
9+1=10
8+2=10
7+3=10
6+4=10
5+5=10
4+6=10
3+7=10
2+8=10
1+9=10
0+10=10

Challenge
It would be great if you could work on number bonds at home. Children who can recall number bonds to 10 without having to count their fingers can collect a house point.

The next step is to work on number bonds to 20 and 100.

16th September 2014

Year 1 2014-2015

The children have had a busy start to the term. Our topic is 'Ourselves' . The children have used oil pastels to produce a self portrait and they have used paint to make hand prints. They have been thinking about how they are the same as their friends and how they are different.

Science
In Science the children have drawn a life size child, thanks to Sam our volunteer, and they have been naming the parts of the body. They have also made a physical bar chart to find the most common eye colour in the class. They concluded it was blue.

English
The children brought in their special toys to talk about and show the class. We have continued our English lessons by looking at some stories about lost toys. You might want to ask them what happened to Knuffle Bunny!

History
Thank you parents for sending in the children's baby photos. They have been thinking about their own history and how they have changed over time.

Maths
We have been working on number. The children have been taught how to form the numbers correctly. I would like the children to keep practising the numbers they find difficult as this is a key skill we need to get right in Year 1. The children have learnt some rhymes to help them to remember the formation.
